An Authentic Beach Town
Huntington Beach is where the passion for catching a wave is believed to be generational even grandmothers pass down the urge to “hang ten” to their grandchildren. It’s here that the history of surfing is not only captured in a museum, walk of fame and hall of fame, but is paid homage to by being displayed on the walls of restaurants and shops throughout downtown. This is where legendary surfing icons such as Duke Kahanamoku are immortalized in bronze and Corky Carroll, Pete Townend, Kelly Slater, Rob Machado and Layne Beachley are proud ambassadors of the city.

Here flip flops are an essential component of the laid-back Southern California wardrobe, while the classic Woody wagon is still seen as a viable mode of transportation and beach cruisers appear to outnumber automobiles as a means to get around town.

This is the city where the scene of dogs frolicking in Dog Beach’s surf makes you smile and think to yourself, “this could be an illustration out of a Dr. Seuss book – big dogs, small dogs, fat dogs, skinny dogs, all dogs!” Where friends and families can gather around a bonfire on the beach; where one can stroll along the Pier enjoying the Pacific breeze and salt air, day or night, while admiring the 8.5 mile stretch of unobstructed ocean view. This is Huntington Beach – Surf City USA!
Go Fly a Kite
Surf City USA® will host the Sixth Annual Kite Party on February 23 & 24, 2008. Hundreds of kites will fill the skies over the Huntington Beach Pier. Some of the best professional kite flyers from around the world including England, Japan, Germany, France, Canada, and Spain have attended this annual non-competitive event to showcase their kite flying skills. The Kite Trade Association International named the event the “Best Kiting Event in the United States.”

Huntington Beach is an ideal kite flying location due to the consistent Western winds and the 8.5 mile stretch of publicly accessible beaches.

The Kite Party is sponsored by The Kite Connection, a local kite shop located on the Huntington Beach pier that has been supplying sport kites for 25 years. Dave Shenkman, the store owner and avid kite enthusiast, has taught more than 500,000 elementary students about kites through a program called Kites for Kids. He also offers free sport kite flying lessons, by appointment, every Saturday at 3:00 p.m. for those who wish to brush up on their skills.

Kite flying has evolved over the years from a passive pastime into an active sport. The American Kitefliers Association, founded in 1964, now has more than 4,000 members in 35 countries.
A Runner’s High in Surf City USA®
As a Midwesterner who took up running marathons in 2005, I was well aware of the elements I would endure. Like a United States postal worker my mind was set that no rain, sleet or snow would keep me from training. Well that tough gal mentality is long gone now that I live in Huntington Beach with its Mediterranean climate and 8.5 mile, Huntington Beach Strand that winds through the legendary surfing beaches of Southern California. The sounds of the waves crashing and the ocean breeze is enough positive stimuli to make even a
long-training run enjoyable, not to mention it sure beats slipping on the ice and snow during a winter run in Wisconsin! Runners visiting Surf City USA, whether for business or pleasure will find the convenience of the multi-purpose path and the surrounding scenic beauty of the Pacific Ocean and beaches enough to motivate them to maintain their workout while traveling. Staying fit and healthy is often difficult when one is away from home and often times a hotel’s fitness center is less than appealing, Huntington Beach provides an ideal running route to achieve that runner’s high!

Surf City USA® Marathon
Picture this..."a start wreathed in light fog, led out by a convoy of restored classic woody sedans and lifeguard vehicles," complete with surfboard storage on top! Marathon & Beyond Magazine calls it a "perfect start/finish." All races begin to the soundtrack of the Beach Boys' Surfin' USA and the cheers of local surfers from Huntington Beach's original surfing club, The Longboard Crew. Limited to 1,000 runners, this spectacular oceanfront course is an exclusive Southern California favorite! Runners pass the famous Huntington Beach pier and continue through scenic Huntington Central Park. Observe native surfers in their own natural habitat as you hit the beachfront running path at Bolsa Chica State Beach. More than 1,000 volunteers and several surf bands are along the way cheering and making sure there is plenty of nourishment and energy!
